History

Cape Coral is a young city, just by European standards. The boom began in the late 1950s. In 1957, the Gulf American Land Corporation was founded to transform the land north of the Caloosahatchee River, owned by brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen, into a true “waterway wonderland”. Fallow and pasture land was crossed with canals and roads. In total, Cape Coral now offers 400 miles (640 km) of waterways and canals, some with access to the Gulf of Mexico and partly freshwater canals, i.e. without access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Waterfront-Wonderland / Villa Romantic Cape Coral

The first houses were built in 1958. Thanks to an active advertising campaign, the city grew rapidly. Many home buyers were lucky, or thoroughly informed before buying, and were able to enjoy a piece of land whose value multiplied over time.

The oldest part of Cape Coral, the “Yacht Club” in the southeastern tip, was created in the 60s. Other areas followed: the so-called “Gold Coast” in the east, the “Pelican Area” in the south.

In 1964, the Cape Coral Bridge was built, connecting the city to Fort Myers. Due to the large population growth, another bridge was needed and completed in 1997. The Midpoint Bridge has brought the two cities even closer together.

In 1970, Cape Coral was registered as a city. The city now has about 169,000 residents and in winter, thanks to tourists and “snow birds” (frozen Americans from the north that the snow drives to Florida) about 20,000 more.

Traffic

Cape Coral is close to North-South Interstate 75. There are two toll bridges over the Caloosahatchee River to Fort Myers. Since 1 November 2007, the bridge toll has only been levied in one direction, from Fort Myers to Cape Coral. Therefore, it is recommended to have two dollars at hand on arrival at Fort Myers, if the destination is Cape Coral. The journey from Cape Coral to Fort Myers is not tolled. By plane, Cape Coral is best reached internationally and nationally via Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, about 18 miles away. For private aircraft or selected short-haul flights, the regional airports in Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, Naples and Englewood are also available.

Population (ancestry)

The inhabitants are German (20.9%), Irish (15.9%), Italian (13.1%), British (11.9%) and Polish (5.0%) descent. About 7.7% of the natives of the Native Americans are descended.
